By Jody Kohn Oscar De La Hoya made headlines this week with his open letter to Floyd Mayweather Jr., in which he trashed the recently retired champions career, ultimately saying that the sport is better without him. And while that point can be argued to death, it obviously didn’t sit well with those in the Mayweather camp. We had the opportunity to sit down with Jeff Mayweather, a man who himself fought Oscar early in his career, to see what he thought of the scathing comments. As you might expect, Mayweather had quite a bit to say.
By Jody Kohn Ashley Theophane has been part of TMT for a couple years now, and sparring with Floyd is nothing new to him. We asked the light welterweight contender what it has been like working with TBE this camp, and Theophane was quick to point out he has already stopped a couple of his sparring partners. Additionally, he tells about how he needed a car and Floyd brought him a brand new 300. Check out the video below to hear all Ashley Theophane has to say.
By Jody Kohn For those who were not already aware of multiple time world champion Layla McCarter, her recent comments about MMA star Ronda Rousey have certainly introduced her to many more. When it was recently suggested that Rousey could walk into boxing and immediately be a world champion, it obviously pissed of many top fighters, and rightfully so. McCarter is certainly no pushover, and for anyone to believe they could walk right in and defeat her is preposterous in her mind. She has been more than willing to share her thoughts, as well as extend an invitation to Rousey to back up the words of her camp with her fists. Besides the white hot topic that is Ronda Rousey, McCarter also talked about a […]
By Jody Kohn When we visit the Mayweather Boxing Club, we usually talk to a wide variety of title holders, contenders and hot prospects. But not everyone can fit that bill. For every fighter that people believe is the next big thing, there must be a fighter that helped build them up. For those fighters, often called “journeymen,” the dreams are the same, it’s just the results that have been different. But make no mistake about it, they have the same determination to reach the top as their more highly thought of competitors. Thomas Herrera is a perfect example of just that. Every day he can be found in the gym, working on his craft, determined to get better. At 4-13, it might appear that […]
By Jody Kohn Gokhan Saki and Tyrone Spong are two of the biggest names to have competed under the GLORY banner, but right now neither of them are under contract with the promotion. Although that is a situation they hope to rectify, doing so may prove quite difficult. We caught up with Cor Hemmers, the GLORY matchmaker, to ask him about each fighter, and what it might take to get both of them back in the ring again. He appears to be optimistic that he can come to terms with them, but admitted there are significant challenges with both. Check out the video for all Hemmers had to say about the situation, as well as the card coming up this weekend in Las Vegas that […]
By Jody Kohn Glory makes it’s much anticipated debut in Las Vegas this weekend, and the main event features a rematch of Glory 19 when Nieky Holzken takes on Raymond Daniels. In their first fight, Holzken stopped his flashy counterpart in the third round following a series of knockdowns. This time, he doesn’t see things going much differently. We had the opportunity to spend some time with the champion kickboxer to get his take on that fight, as well as some other topics including what he hopes will be his next opponent next month on the combined Bellator/Glory card in San Jose. There he hopes to take on Paul Daley in a battle of kickboxing star vs. MMA star. We will see if Daley is […]
By Jody Kohn Mike Hunter (9-0) has seemed to find his groove lately, scoring his second TKO in the past several weeks. This time, the victim was Mike Bissett (9-7) and the location was The Palms in Las Vegas, NV. Prior to the past couple of victories, Hunter, though undefeated, seemed to be flying under the radar and mostly ignored when conversations about the sport’s top prospects were discussed. However, all that has seemed to change as his impressive performances on televised cards have gotten people talking about the 2012 Olympian. We spoke to Hunter following his fight to talk about his performance, and what it means for him going forward.
By Jody Kohn It is often noted that Jeff Mayweather is not the visible presence around Floyd Mayweather Jr. that his brothers Roger and Floyd are. As a result, Jeff is much less known than both. We spoke with the trainer to get his explanation as to why that is, and also to find out if it bothers him in any way. Not surprisingly, Jeff is content with his place in the pecking order and holds no grudge towards his brothers for being more in the spotlight than he is. Check out the interview below to hear all Jeff has to say on the situation.
By Jody Kohn Jeff Mayweather was on duty once again, this time making the rounds inside the Mayweather Boxing Club to find out what some of the fighters listen to when it is time to get romantic. Ronald Gavril, Badou Jack, Roger Mayweather and Lou Del Valle are just a couple that gave their, often, quite humorous picks.
By Jody Kohn Though he controlled the vast majority of the action in his fight with Jason Escalera on Sunday, J’Leon Love still had to overcome some adversity. Perhaps feeling a little overconfident, Love got caught early in the first and was dropped to the canvas. However, he recovered nicely and quickly took charge. Things culminated in the 7th round when Love sealed the deal, knocking out Escalera in dramatic fashion. We caught up with the TMT fighter shortly afterwards to get his thoughts on the fight.
By Jody Kohn Though he has lived in Las Vegas for most of his life, 2012 Olympian Michael Hunter has yet to fight in his hometown as a professional. All that will change on Saturday night when he takes on Deon Elam as part of the undercard of the Adrien Broner vs. Shawn Porter fight at the MGM. We caught up with the heavyweight to get his thoughts on his Las Vegas debut. Hunter and Errol Spence talking about being on the same card.
By Jody Kohn We put Jeff Mayweather to work and had him make the rounds inside the Mayweather Boxing Club to ask people who their favorite all time fighters are. There were some answers that were quite predictable, and others that you would have never guessed. Hear what the guys had to say in this entertaining video.
By Jody Kohn Lanell Bellows (12-1-1) avenged the only defeat of his career last week when he beat Eddie Hunter in a convincing unanimous decision inside The Palms Hotel & Casino. He was part of a card that featured many of his TMT teammates for an event that kicked off the festivities for the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao weekend. Bellows talks about getting redemption against Hunter, the clean sweep for TMT, and if he has now positioned himself in the title picture.
By Jody Kohn We put Jeff Mayweather on a special assignment to get predictions from his fellow fighters on the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight. He may not be a polished interviewer, but he got picks from such notable fighters as Mike McCallum, Jessie Vargas, Mia St. john, Kevin Newman II, Badou Jack and more.
By Jody Kohn For any young fighter looking to improve, it is who he gets to spar that really makes a big difference in his development. Well, for Maurice Lee (4-0), working with Floyd Mayweather Jr. is about as good as it gets. We talked to the young fighter to get his thoughts on working with Floyd, and how he thinks it will help him improve his own game.
By Jody Kohn We spoke with the talented and beautiful Sunshine Honrade of Fil-Am TV about the festivities surrounding the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight. In the United States, we love our athletes, but it pales in comparison to the support that Filipinos give to Manny Pacquiao. With the weight of the nation on his shoulders, Honrade tells us if he is up to the task, and what the legendary boxer means to her people.
By Jody Kohn Over the past weeks we have been told about the startling prices that tickets close to the ring for Mayweather vs. Pacquiao have been going for. Well, for former champ, Raul Marquez, he will be having one of the best seats in the house. And to make things even better, rather than paying an outrageous price for that seat, he actually will get paid to sit there! We talk to the Showtime announcer about that, and also how he thinks will unfold during the fight.
By Jody Kohn Popular sports host Stephen A. Smith joined Floyd Mayweather Sr. to talk a little about the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight taking place this weekend. Smith has long been a fan of the abilities of Floyd Jr. and believes he will win the fight. But who does he think would win a game of one-on-one? Watch the video to find out!
By Jody Kohn While speaking to the press following the final Mayweather vs. Pacquiao press conference, legendary promoter Bob Arum suggested that Floyd Mayweather Jr. has begun to slow down. At the same time, he says Manny Pacquiao has shown no such times. He also says that despite the difficulties in making this fight, he has no more rooting interest this time around than he has had for previous fights.
By Jody Kohn Ronald Gavril was one of the most highly touted TMT fighters, rattling off 11 consecutive victories to start off his career. In his twelfth fight, he dropped a decision that caught most by surprise. We spoke with his trainer, the legendary Eddie Mustafa Muhammad to get his thoughts on the loss, and how he thinks that will affect his fighter going forward.
By Jody Kohn We spoke with talented TMT fighter Kevin Newman II (1-0-1) about his return to action this week, and why he believes that this time around, he will have his most complete performance to date. The last time out, Newman dominated the entire fight, but failed to finish off his opponent, which frustrated the young fighter and some in his camp. He promises that going forthe kill will not be an issue this time out. Newman takes to the ring on Thursday night as part of a card that features many of his TMT stablemates including Ishe Smith, Ashley Theophane and Ronald Gavril.
By Jody Kohn We spent a few moments with talented TMT fighter Ashley Theophane inside the Mayweather Boxing Club to get his thoughts on his own big fight this week, which he hopes puts him one step closer to a title fight. Theophane fights on Thursday night on a card that features many of his TMT stablemates. He, along with Ishe Smith will appear on the televised portion of the card.
By Jody Kohn The Mayweather Boxing Club has always been a popular destination for fighters from other camps to come and get in some work. That seems particularly true for fighters from the UK. Chris Evangelou is the latest fighter to spend some time in the gym, looking to take his game to the next level. And if you have had the opportunity to see him in the gym so far, it appears he is definitely making the most of his trip. We spent a few moments with Chris to find out what the experience has been like so far, as well as how training in the United States compares to training in the UK.
By Jody Kohn The legendary Chuck Zito was the latest celebrity to swing by the Mayweather Boxing Club, and we were lucky enough to get a few moments of his time. To make it even beter, we grabbed legendary Muay Thai fighter Dewey Cooper to serve as our guest interviewer. Both guys delivered, as they talked about Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather, and that became a conversation about who was the greatest of all time. Check out the videos and let us know who you think is TBE!
By Jody Kohn The last time we spoke with Jeremy Nichols, he had yet to get his feet wet in the ring with Floyd Mayweather Jr. Since that is no longer the case, we had to follow up with the soon to be pro and hear about his experience. As you might expect, he was both honored to share the ring and impressed with what he saw from Mayweather. However, he didn’t let that prevent him from showing what he could do. After an experience like this, it’s hard to imagine there will be much for him to worry about when he finally gets his own shot to shine in the pros in the coming months.
