Jeff Mayweather is branching out

Long known as the “quiet” Mayweather, Jeff has lived in the shadow of his more well known siblings for most of his adult life. Higher profile boxing careers along with their working with Floyd Mayweather Jr. have given Floyd Mayweather Sr. and Roger more exposure to fans of boxing. Although that doesn’t seem to bother Jeff in the least, at long last it seems Jeff is finally starting to get the due he may have been deserving of all along. Where it may be coming from, however, is a very unusual source.

By any standards Jeff Mayweather had a very good career as a fighter, and as a trainer he has exceeded that level. He has trained multiple world champions including Sultan Ibragimov and Celestino Caballero as well as numerous fighters who currently, or previously have been in title contention. While he may have never been the trainer for his nephew Floyd Mayweather Jr., his fighters have achieved the highest levels of success.

Despite such achievements as a trainer in boxing, it may be his recent work in MMA that is finally garnering him the attention he so richly deserves. This past weekend, one of the fighters he works closely with, Roy Nelson, dominated Matt Mitrione in a first round knockout that clearly displayed the improved boxing skills Nelson has gained under the watch of Jeff. Widely acknowledged for the strides made in his stand up, Big Country’s performance has forced people to take a look at the man largely responsible for the changes he has made.

In addition to his work with Roy Nelson, Jeff has worked with several other notable fighters competing in MMA currently. While he does not work with them full time, Mayweather has previously worked for a time with Vitor Belfort, TJ Dillashaw and Danny Castillo. It’s his relationship with King Mo, however, that he is most well known for in MMA circles. The two began working together prior to his fight with Roger Gracie, and ever since King Mo has sung the praises of his boxing coach.

While it is unlikely Jeff plans on leaving behind his day job as a trainer for boxers, it appears he has found a nice side gig working with MMA fighters. MMA has long been lacking in top level boxing. Great wrestlers and jiu jitsu experts have been a staple to the sport, but boxing has been sorely missing. Finally, it seems as though the smarter competitors are learning that great boxing skills are just as important as any other skill.

While he may not speak as loudly as his siblings, Jeff Mayweather is letting others do it for him. With notorious talkers like King Mo and Roy Nelson singing his praises, the word is fast spreading that Jeff Mayweather is among the best trainers in the world. Although he is already busy with an impressive stable of boxers, he always seems to have room for one more athlete seeking out his services. Boxing may always be his first love, but there is nothing wrong with him getting a little action on the side.
