Matthysse stops Soto after round five

Los Angeles, California – Lucas Matthysse (31-2, 29 KOs) stopped Humberto Soto (58-8-2, 34 KO) to claim the vacant WBC Continental Americas jr. welterweight title. Soto started out fast, as he got his jab going in the opening round. The reach and height advantages for Soto, gave Matthysse problems in the second round as Soto fought behind the jab.

Matthysse dropped Soto with a right hand at the end of the second, right after the bell, therefore, it was not counted as a knockdown. Things got heated in round three as Matthysse got the better of the exchanges. Just as Matthysse was winning the fourth with his pressure style, Soto maybe stole the round as he landed flush right hands and uppercuts at the end of the round. The fifth round saw back and forth action. Close to the end of round five, Matthysse rocks Soto with combinations and drops Soto with a right hand. Soto got up on wobbly legs, but his corner stopped the fight between rounds five and six.
