Peter Fury interview for Pro Boxing Insider

Pro Boxing Insider has just caught up with the uncle and trainer of Tyson Fury, Peter Fury. Here’s what he had to say about their camps preparations for Tyson Fury vs David Haye.

We are now three weeks away from Tyson’s biggest fight to date and the nations biggest heavyweight fight since Lewis vs. Bruno, 20 years ago. First of all, how are preparations going out in Belgium?

Preparation is spot on out in Belgium. I’m happy.

Are you happy with how sparring is going?

Yes, we had Michael Sprott for the first week of camp and Dillian Whyte left last week. We now have Eddie Chambers & Steve Cunningham, also Arfan Iqbal at light heavy & Rico Verhoven. Sparring is going great. Tyson has now moved up through the gears and performing great.

How do you rate David Haye as a fighter? What do you believe are his strengths and weaknesses? What are your thoughts on Deontay Wilder helping David Haye with his preparations for Sept 28th?

I think David Haye is a top fighter and belongs up there. His strengths are his movements, power and speed. His only weakness is his size, compared to the giants of the sport today. Bringing Wilder in will help him find his range of punching up, but it ends right there. None of them are like Tyson & he’s really hard to prepare for.

I appreciate Tyson has fought in Madison Square Gardens, but I believe the 21,000 boxing fans in the Phones 4 U Arena, Manchester, are going to create a truly special atmosphere come fight night. How do you feel Tyson will cope with this?

Tyson will cope no problem. As a matter of fact, he loves it and relishes the challenge. I’ve never seen him so happy.

David Haye has previously been perceived, by some, to have boxed negatively and at range against his larger opponents (Valuev & W.Klitschko). Do you see David Haye fighting that way against Tyson?

I believe David will want to get Tyson out of there as soon as possible and there for. come forward to make a fight of it. As David will see Tyson as vulnerable from his past fights.

Do you believe victory over David Haye will guarantee Tyson a shot at one of the Klitschko’s, within the next 12 months?

It’s hard to say what fights will be available after the Haye fight, but one would hope these fights can be made.

Prediction time… In your humble opinion, how do you feel the fight will play out?

My prediction for this fight is it’s not going to go the way so many think. It’s a tough fight and may the best man win. I wont be sitting on any fence though. I believe in Tyson to get the job done and what I’m seeing in training, I’m happy with.

Finally, do you have a message for all the Team Fury supporters out there?

Yes to all our supporters out there, when the going gets hard & you have to step up to the plate, that’s what we do. These are the times I’m interested in, big fights! You’ll get to watch something very special unfold come fight night. Confidence, ability and the iron will to win.

Thank-you very much for your time Peter. I wish you and Tyson all the best on the 28th of September, in what promises to be a special night for the Fury family and supporters.
