Sergio Thompson could earn title shot with win this weekend on Saturday, Aug 2 on Televisa & Fox Deportes

Following his big win over Ricardo Alvarez on March 8, Mexican star Sergio “Yeyo” Thompson has the opportunity to put himself back in line for a world title shot on Saturday, August 2, when he faces the Philippines’ Adones Aguelo in a WBC super featherweight title elimination bout to air live on Televisa and FOX Deportes from Estadio Nachan Kaan in Chetumal, Mexico.

The bout will be Thompson’s first in his hometown since October of 2012.

In the co-main event, it’s an all-Mexico slugfest when welterweights Silverio “Chamaco” Ortiz of Merida, Yucatan Mexico and Fernando Castaneda of Aguascalientes battle it out in a 10-round matchup.

One of Mexico’s premier boxers, 30-year-old Sergio “Yeyo” Thompson (29-3, 26 KOs) was on the fast track to a world title and on a 13-fight winning streak when he lost a 2013 Fight of the Year candidate to WBC 130-pound champion Takashi Miura in August of 2013. Unbeaten in two fights over Cesar Chavez and Ricardo Alvarez since then, Thompson has his sights set on a rematch with Miura, but he has to get past Aguelo this Saturday first.

Hailing from Cebu in the Philippines, 26-year-old Adones “Yamagata” Aguelo (21-9-2, 13 KOs) is a true road warrior, having fought in Mexico, Thailand, Japan, Indonesia, and Australia over the course of his eight-year career, building his reputation while honing his craft in the ring. Unbeaten in four of his last five bouts, Aguelo can earn his first crack at a world title with a win over Thompson.

The latest member of a fighting family to make its mark in the boxing world, 31-year-old Silverio Ortiz (26-14, 14 KOs) is a respected veteran who has been on a hot streak over the last few years, winning 11 of his last 12 bouts, including five straight. Hoping to show that he’s ready to make a move into the world rankings, Ortiz knows that a win over Castaneda will be an important one.

Nicknamed “Huracan,” 25-year-old Fernando Castaneda (21-8, 14 KOs) is on the comeback trail after two recent losses, but considering that he won 10 of his previous 11 bouts before those setbacks, he’s right on time for a spectacular return to form, and what better time to do it than this weekend in Chetumal?

Thompson vs. Aguelo, a 10-round WBC super featherweight title elimination bout, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Cancun Boxing of Pepe Gomez and sponsored by Corona. Doors open at 6pm CT and the first fight begins at 6:30pm CT. The Televisa broadcast will air on Canal 5 and begins at 10:30pm CST (Delayed Broadcast) and the FOX Deportes broadcast will air at 10 pm ET/7pm PT (Live Broadcast) .
