Shawn Porter reflects on title win, eyes next opponent

By Jody Kohn

Shawn Porter captured the IBF welterweight title from Devon Alexander last month in a fight he went into as a decided underdog.  Despite the long odds against him, Porter was full of confidence, knowing that he had the tools to take the title away from Alexander.

It didn’t take long for him to make believers out of the fans in attendance and those watching on television as he controlled the action from the opening bell all the way until the fight’s conclusion.  Never in trouble, the reading of the scores was just a formality as the Akron native captured the first world title of his career.

Now that he is a champion, Porter is enjoying the opportunity to have a little more control over who he will fight going forward.  However, he is not looking to make it easy on himself.  Instead, he has his eyes on more titles, particularly those held by Marcos Maidana.  After attending the Maidana vs. Broner fight, Porter made it known that he would love the opportunity to have a crack at Maidana next.  Unfortunately, he may have to wait a little while longer as it appears that Maidana will be first required to grant Broner a rematch.

We spoke to Shawn Porter to get his thoughts on what it is like to be able to call himself a world champion now, as well as what he hopes is next for him.  He was attending a dinner for the launch of a new show that will be airing on NUVOtv called “Knockout.”  The show features boxers looking to make a name for themselves who are trained by some legendary trainers.  He, along with Jessie Vargas and Zab Judah will serve as mentors for the fighters, offering them advice as they hope to achieve similar success to his.  The show should air startingin April.
