Stuart Hall vs Randy Caballero Preview and Prediction

By Ian S Palmer

The IBF Bantamweight title is up for grabs this Saturday, October 25 when Stuart Hall of Darlington, England takes on Randy Caballero of Coachella, California. Hall recently held the title, but lost it via a split decision to fellow Briton Paul Butler just under five months ago. However, Butler has decided to leave the belt behind and move down in weight. This 12-round bout can be seen on Channel 5 in the UK and will be taking place at the Salle des etoiles, in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

The 34-year-old Hall will enter the ring with a record of 16-3-2 with 7 Kos while the undefeated 24-year-old Caballero has a perfect mark of 21-0 with 13 stoppages to his name. They’ve both fought the same number of pro fights, but the younger boxer has more power and potential while Hall has never really been a Grade A boxer during his career. If Caballero is to become a star in the sport then he needs to get past the likes of Hall in impressive fashion.

Hall lacks knockout power and doesn’t own the fastest pair of hands around, but he’s done well for what he has, which is a big heart, a good chin, and intelligence inside the ring. He won the vacant IBF title back in late 2013 when he decisioned Vusi Malinga to win the vacated crown in Dec. 2013. His three career losses have come at the hands of Butler, Lee Haskins and Jamie McDonnell on points, but Caballero could be the best of the bunch. He certainly has more power than the boxers who have beaten Hall. The former British and European Champion Hall also has a two-round technical draw o his record against Martin Ward and a six-round draw against Stuart McFadyen.

Hall does have the advantage when it comes to experience even though they’ve fought the same number of bouts. This is due to his previous title fights and the fact that he’s gone 12 rounds six times before while Caballero hasn’t fought more than 10. The American goes into this fight with five straight stoppages under his belt, but gives up two inches in height to the 5-foot-8-inch Hall. Caballero can be hit however, but Hall doesn’t really have the power to stop him. Therefore he’s going to have to outwork and outbox his younger opponent.

Hall also needs to try to stay away from Caballero’s power and make sure he doesn’t leave himself open for counter shots. He has a good chin, but still needs to be aware of Caballero’s superior power and makes sure that he doesn’t get drawn into a firefight. To do this he’ll have to use his physical advantages and make Caballero pay whenever he steps into range and try to keep him at a safe distance.

Prediction

Hall had a tough opponent in Butler, but he’s stepping up in class even more with Caballero. Hall has good skills and mediocre power while Caballero is better in both departments. There’s a chance this fight will go the distance due to Hall’s experience and chin, but he will be tempted to fight fire with fire and that could cost him his record of never being stopped. Look for Caballero to eventually catch up with Hall and stop him somewhere in the second half of the fight.
