THE EDGES – GUERRERO VS. AYDIN

By: Joston “El Rey” Theney

As athletes of our era jockey for greater, and sometimes more artificial, edges to eek out even the slightest margins of victory, this Saturday night’s welterweight clash between Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (29-1, 18KOs) and Selcuk “Mini Tyson” Aydin (23-0, 17KOs) is chocked-full of good-old fashioned southpaw vs. conventional fighter, boxer vs. brawler, and active vs. inactive edges, in an intriguing, firefight for the WBC Interim Welterweight Championship of the world.

“The Ghost” leaps up two weight divisions to challenge the undefeated “Mini Tyson” Aydin and, never one to under-sell himself, says, “Expect to see a monster in there July 28th. I will finally get what I deserve.” After dismantling the wide-swinging brawler Michael Katsidis and fighting the wily veteran Joel Casamayor to a unanimous decision, Guerrero set his sights on Marcos Maidana, only to suffer a shoulder injury during training camp which sat him out for 15 months and until now. But with a renewed vigor and looking for a fight to catapult him into the pound-for-pound rankings, The Ghost has vowed a triumphant and emphatic return against a prime, power-punching Mini Tyson. Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero steps through the ropes with the edge as an aggressive, southpaw boxer-puncher with great balance, accuracy and a durable chin.

Looking to capitalize on Guerrero’s shoulder injury and inactivity is the compact, power-punching Aydin, who has been very active lately with 3 fights just last year. Earning his name “Mini Tyson” with thunder in both hands and a high work-rate, Aydin’s 74% KO percentage is purely a by-product of his effective aggressiveness. After blasting through previous opponent Raman Dzehkanau in 4 rounds and Dzmitry Lubachkin in just 1, Selcuk Aydin believes in his power and has vowed to break Guerrero’s jaw. Selcuk “Mini Tyson” Aydin steps through the ropes with the edge in crippling power, a higher work-rate and recent activity on his side.

With athletes searching far and wide for edges in their respective sports, it’s often easy to miss the obvious. This weekend features a well-rounded, southpaw boxer-puncher versus an orthodox brawler with ambidextrous thunder. It features an inactive boxer seeking the money and attention that has eluded him versus an active WBC #1 ranked puncher seeking respect from an opponent, and the media, that has overlooked him. When a roll of thunder meets the crackle of lightening, that is where you’ll find the firefight between Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (29-1, 18KOs) and Selcuk “Mini Tyson” Aydin (23-0, 17KOs). Join them this Saturday night, from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA live on SHOWTIME 10PM ET/PT
