WBC light welterweight title declared vacant, Viktor Postol vs Lucas Matthysse ordered

Danny Garcia spoke to WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman and after a very emotional conversation, agreed to relinquish his Green and Gold belt. The World Boxing Council has declared the WBC super lightweight title vacant. Danny’s weight situation forced his decision to fight at welterweight and confirmed his physical ability to compete in that division while assessing the possibility of returning to 140 pounds.

The WBC is ordering Victor Postol to fight Lucas Matthysse for the WBC super lightweight championship. Postol has been the division’s mandatory contender and had registered with the WBC a step aside agreement with several provisions, all of which were complied with to his benefit, and since the Postol-Garcia fight will not happen, then Postol will fight Matthysse, who won the right by beating Ruslan Provodnikov, and the fight will be for the WBC undisputed super lightweight championship.

Garcia conquered the WBC title by defeating the legendary Erik Morales and made impressive title defenses against Morales and Amir Khan. The highlight of his career was the 2013 Fight of the Year when he defeated then-WBC interim champion Matthysse .

Garcia has competed in over-the-weight fights and has notified the WBC of his concern in making the 140-pound limit. The WBC will coordinate a specific medical study of body mass composition to be performed at UCLA to determine the division in which he is safe to fight .

The WBC Board of Governors has voted in favor of honoring Danny Garcia with the designation of Champion Emeritus, which will allow him to perform his medical tests and should he be cleared to fight in the super lightweight division, he will have the right to challenge for the championship.
