Yigit’s opponent backed by American heavyweight great Holyfield

Anthony Yigit’s (19-0-1, 7 KOs) opponent Sandor Martin (29-1, 10 KOs) has received the backing of American heavyweight great Evander Holyfield ahead of their European Super Lightweight title fight on September 30 at the Solnahallen in Stockholm.

Martin, the 23 year-old from Barcelona, has signed a promotional contract with the former four-time heavyweight world champion, and teaming up with Holyfield before such as big fight is sure to give the Spanish fighter a boost as he prepares for his EBU title challenge.

Known for his epic clashes with Riddick Bowe, Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson, including the infamous ear biting rematch, Holyfield is considered one of boxing’s all-time greats, and was this year inducted into the ‘International Boxing Hall of Fame’.

However, despite the American’s involvement, Yigit remains confident of defending his title, and says he hopes Holyfield will be ringside at the Solnahallen to watch the fight.

‘’Evander Holyfield is a legend in boxing,’’ said Yigit. ‘’And hopefully this means he’ll be coming to Stockholm for the fight. Although if he does, he will be going home disappointed.

‘’Sandor Martin is going to need Evander Holyfield in the ring with him to beat me. I’m ready to prove that I’m the ‘Real Deal’ by defending my belt on September 30.’’

Yigit became the first Swedish boxer in 30 years to win the European title when he defeated British boxer Lenny Daws in February, and his maiden defence will be the first time in over 50 years the title has been contested on Swedish soil following Bo Hogberg’s unsuccessful attempt at Sandro Mazzinghi super welterweight strap on October 11, 1966.

On the undercard, former amateur star Oliver Flodin makes his professional debut, while Danish boxers Mikkel Nielsen and Adam Bashanov attempt to upset rising Swedish stars Simon Henriksson and Hampus Henriksson, with more fights to be announced soon.
