Who should be next for GGG?

By John-Paul Wolfe

Gennady Golovkin’s risky, aggressive style coupled with polished boxing technique and natural gifts of destructive power and an iron chin make him a pleasure to watch, even against the most overmatched opponents. His ability and willingness to fight between several weight divisions offers many intriguing potential matchups. Following the defeat of his next victim, Martin Murray, in Jan., these are the bouts fans should be hoping for.

Floyd Mayweather, Saul Alvarez and Miguel Cotto. Three of the four biggest stars in boxing today are possible future fights for Golovkin.

Mayweather, although unlikely to accept a fight against GGG, would be tested by the size and strength of the bigger man. If there is one fighter who has the ability to beat the P4P king, it’s Gennady Golovkin. However, GGG would struggle to make the 154lb limit that this fight is likely to be contested at, and at this time, Mayweather is not going to be impressed GGG’s PPV draw.

Mexico’s biggest boxing star has a much better chance at being matched up against Golovkin. Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is back to his winning ways since being thoroughly outclassed by Mayweather in 2013. For Canelo, making 154lbs is becoming an increasingly difficult task and when he is forced to move to middleweight, GGG will be waiting for him. A fight between these two power punching technicians will be a race for the knockout. Assuming both continue on their current trajectory, this fight has a good shot at happening in 2015.

A fight between two title holders is also possible. Miguel Cotto maintained his place among the sports best by beating down and knocking out Sergio Martinez for the 160lb title. With the resurgence of Cotto as a hard hitting boxer-puncher these two could put on an all-time great fight that would leave no doubt as to who is the best middleweight in the world.
