Simpiwe Vetyeka on ending Chris John’s career, loss to Nonito Donaire

By Jody Kohn

Simpiwe Vetyeka stopped by the Mayweather Boxing Club on Monday to check out some of the work going on inside the gym.  We had the opportunity to spend a few moments to talk to the former champion about what has been a very interesting past year.

It all started back in December, when the South African Vetyeka took on Chris John.  The longtime WBA champion was undefeated at 48-0-3, and few expected the South African fighter to cause him much trouble.  Vetyeka didn’t get the memo, and he battered John throughout 6 rounds, forcing him to retire on the stool after the 6th.  That momentous victory was made even more sweet as it came just a day after the iconic Nelson Mandella passed away.

Following that career defining win, Vetyeka would take on Nonito Donaire.  That fight would not go the same way, as the contest would be called in the fifth due to a cut suffered by Donaire during a head butt.  It went to the scorecards where Donaire was awarded a unanimous decision.  That verdict has stung Vetyeka ever since, and his main focus is to get a second chance at the Filipino fighter.
