Swedish light heavyweight Erik Skoglund (21-0, 11 KOs) has chosen to vacate his European (EU) title as he looks to continue his charge towards world glory. Skoglund, who is undefeated in twenty-one professional contests, has made no secret of his desire to challenge for a world title. The 23 year-old believes that by relinquishing the European (EU) belt he will be better placed to secure a shot at one of the division’s champions in 2015.
‘‘Holding the European (EU) title has meant a lot to me,’’ said Skoglund. ‘’I have had the belt for just under a year and defended it three times, of that I’m very proud. However it is time for me to move forward, I must test myself against skilled fighters from all over the world. I’ve already proven that I belong at European level and now I will show that I’m ready to face the best in the world.‘’
Said promoter Nisse Sauerland: ‘’The European (EU) belt is a very prestigious title and an important step for any boxer coming through the rankings. However, we feel that now the time is right for Erik to vacate the belt so that we can focus on securing him a world title shot. It was not a decision that was taken lightly but it is a decision that we felt necessary. Erik is currently ranked #4 with the WBO and #5 with the IBF, we will be looking to improve on these rankings before challenging for a world title in 2015.’’
Skoglund was last in action on September 13 in Copenhagen, where he defended the European (EU) title and claimed the IBF Intercontinental crown with a unanimous decision points victory against Stefano Abatangelo.
