Once again, Kell Brook and Devon Alexander have hit a snag before meeting for their world title fight. This time, a foot injury has forced Brook to withdraw from the May 18 fight with IBF welterweight champion Alexander.
Eddie Hearn, the promoter for Brook is hoping the fight can be scheduled for a date later in the year. In a prepared statement he addressed the matter.
“Kell has recently developed pain in his right foot. Following specialist review and investigations over the last 10 days he has been diagnosed with a stress fracture of his right fourth metatarsal and a further injury of his right navicular, both of which require on-going treatment including withdrawal from full training.
“As a result of these injuries and the time required to recover he has been advised that he will not be medically fit to fight on May 18.
“Obviously this is a huge blow and Kell is devastated, but we have had to make the right decision for Kell Brook the fighter. We will speak with Golden Boy and hope to reschedule the bout in the near future.”
The fight has previously been rescheduled twice, but a third time may not be forthcoming. Kevin Cunningham, the trainer for Alexander said that his fighter would be defending his title next month, regardless if it’s Brook that is fighting him.
“Can you believe this clown Brook? Devon boxed 10 rounds (Thursday) and is looking sharp. He’s ready to go May 18, with Brook or without him.
“I’m keeping Devon focused on fighting May 18. If Brook’s not ready it’s time to move on to the next available (contender).”
“Don’t know for sure (what’s wrong with Brook). Devon will stay on. If necessary, against somebody else,” CEO Richard Schaefer said last week.
The two were originally supposed to meet in January, but Brook suffered an ankle injury. Then in February, they were supposed to meet, but this time Alexander pulled out with a bicep injury.
