Cruiserweight champ Marco Huck and the interim titleholder, Ola Afolabi, finally have a date for their third meeting. Sauerland Event, the promoter for Huck announced on June 8, at the Max-Schmeling-Hall in Germany, the two will meet for the title.
Originally, the pair were scheduled to meet on May 11, also in Germany, but that date had to be scratched. Don King had won the purse bid earning him rights to the fight, but he defaulted. That bid came as shocker as King promoted neither fighter, and because of its amount ($1.5 million).
After King defaulted on his bid, the rights fell to the second place bidder, which was Sauerland Event. They had bid much less at $914,444. The only other bidder was K2 Promotions, who is the promoter for Ola Afolabi.
“After that was all set, we quickly came to an agreement with Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, who is looking after the interests of Afolabi,” Sauerland Event managing director Chris Meyer said.
Under the bid that was offered by Sauerland, Huck will be given 80% of the money, while Afolabi will earn the remaining 20%.
“I’m glad that we have finally arrived at this point,” said Germany’s Huck, who lives in Berlin and will be making his 11th title defense. “I will be fighting in my backyard. Ola Afolabi is a tough nut to crack. However, he won’t be causing me that much trouble again. I will prove who is the best in Berlin.”
Marco Huck (35-2-1, 25 KO’s) won a decision against Ola Afolabi (19-2-5, 9 KO’s) back in a 2009 title offense that took place in Germany. The pair met again in May of last year in a thrilling fight that resulted in a draw. Because of that draw, the WBO ordered the third fight.
This will be the first fight for Huck under a new agreement that he signed with Sauerland that will keep him under their umbrella until the end of 2014.
