Segio Martinez may have just barely retained his title on Saturday when he took a unanimous decision from Martin Murray, but the fight certainly took its toll on the aging champion.
He suffered a fracture in his left hand, and also was bothered by an old knee injury in the bout in which Martinez fought in his native country for the first time in years. The victory pinned the first loss of his career on Martin Murray.
The WBC reported that Martinez “suffered a compression fracture on his largest carpal bone of the left hand so he had to go through the medical center, where his arm was placed in a plaster.”
Additionally, the report said that doctors told him “to have no activity in the next 45 days while his recovery will last about 2 months.”
Martinez responded, according to the WBC by saying “An injury is always hard to overcome but I don’t think this means the end of my career. I will have to work very hard to recover.”
This injury is not in the same location as the one he suffered in his last fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. when they fought last year. But it is pretty clear that Martinez will not return to action for at least the rest of 2013.
Although he was undefeated, he put up a lot more resistance than many had expected. Had it not been for a knockdown that was ruled a slip, Murray may have been able to pull off the upset.
