Floyd once again produced another boxing clinic by defeating Robert Guerrero this past Saturday night. Guerrero, early on was countering Floyd’s lethal right hand by touching Floyd down stairs each time that the right hand would zoom out. Floyd as always, then made a few adjustments by stepping in then out after turning the right leads into right hooks. In all honesty, the fight played out exactly how I thought it would play out. I knew it was a complete mismatch, the second the ink dried up on that fight contract. I am such a boxing geek with it, that it’s not even funny. I studied tape on the Ghost, and his fight against Yordan told me right away that the straight right hand would be way too much for him to handle. So excuse me if I am not going out of my way to praise Floyd for this performance. For me, it was expected, you don’t get extra credit for doing what you are supposed to do.
It was a good quality win against a tough fighter, nothing more, nothing less. Floyd’s record remains perfect at 44-0, and will now more than likely look to feast on junior welterweights. I for one, hope that Floyd looks to challenge himself a bit and will decide to fight foes at 154. Tougher challenges await at 154, opposed to what is currently available for him at 147. For Guerrero (31-2-1), I would love to see him in against Victor Ortiz, the Malignaggi/Broner winner, or the winner between Marcos Maidana/Josesito Lopez clash.
Extra credit for Abner Mares- For 2 fights in a row now, Mares has beaten two fighters in Anselmo Moreno and now Daniel Ponce De Leon that presented real challenging threats to Mares. Now that is what you call daring to be great. Taking tough fights that deep down remind you that you might possibly lose. Mares was so on point in his performance, that it forced De Leon to just employ the left hand out of fear of getting caught with a bomb if he were to fire out more rights. Mares is a straight up beast.
Leo Santa Cruz, a punching machine– Speaking of beast, wow, this kid is an animal. Leo is a storm, a meat grinder, a walking torture chamber, and a Mexican mauler all wrapped into one fighter. What a fighter, I want to see a lot more of this kid.
Rosado gets no LOVE from one particular judge– Gabe Rosado and J’Leon Love to me fought a good, somewhat close fight. At one time, I mentioned out loud that I had Rosado up by 2 points, but I could very well see it going 1 or 2 points either way, or quite possibly even a draw. But by no means was this a 97-92 type of fight, the judge that turned in that score for Love, had either too much love for Love, or is an undercover member of The Money Team. Whatever the case, that judge should never be allowed to judge any type of contest. I don’t care if it’s a hot dog eating contest or a pie eating contest.
I tell you what, if Rosado can get back to 154, I see Rosado making some real noise in that weight class. Austin Trout, Miguel Cotto, the winner of Smith/Molina are all there at 154. At 160, I would go after Sergio Martinez or Daniel Geale. As for J’Leon Love, my 2012 prospect of the year displayed a lot of heart by getting himself back up after being dropped, but if I were him, this very unpopular decision would not sit well with me.
