While Jeff Mayweather gets a lot of attention for the high profile fighters he works with in both boxing and MMA, it is some of his amateur fighters that get him the most excited when he goes to work every day.
One of these fighters is Kevin Newman II, an impressive amateur Jeff has worked with since he was just nine years old. Now, 21-years-old, Newman is looking to wrap up his amateur career before turning pro later in the year. Once he turns pro, Mayweather believes he has all the tools it takes to one day become a world champion.
Prior to getting any titles around his waste, however, Newman has had to overcome a serious arm injury that has prevented him from going full speed for the better part of the last year. The injury required him to undergo Tommy John surgery, a procedure common to pitchers in baseball, but not boxers.
Although he has been able to hit pads and do other lighter work, he has been unable to go all out in sparring. Finally, this week, the man responsible for getting him back in fighting shape, Dr. Jedediah Jones, has given him clearance to resume all boxing related activities. Not one to waste time, Kevin has immediately got back to work, thankful for the efforts of his doctor.
In one of his very first times back in the ring since before his injury, we saw Newman sparring with Chris Pearson, himself a gifted boxer with a professional record of 7-0. Despite being in with a professional, and having been out of action for an extended period of time, Newman held his own. Following the action, we spent a few minutes talking to him about how it felt about finally getting back into the swing of things.
Once he shakes of a little of the ring rust, Kevin Newman is eager to compete for real once again.
