Garcia vs Gamboa couldn’t come at a better time for HBO. As of right now the fight has not been made, however it has been a long time in the making. Since last October Garcia has been vocal about wanting to fight Gamboa, and Gamboa has been very vocal as of late with his Twitter campaign to get a fight with either Mikey Garcia or Andrien Broner.
Gamboa left Top Rank and is currently signed with rapper turned promoter 50 cent, but they have solid working relationship with Top Rank that could make this fight a reality. In Garcia’s last fight with Lopez, he weighed in at 128 pounds, which is just two pounds shy of the 130 pound weight division. Gamboa recently said on Twitter that he would be willing to move down to 130 pounds to fight Garcia.
This fight would be a treat for all boxing fans. Stylistically, it has all the makings for a legendary fight. With Mikey Garcia being a boxer/puncher with tremendous power and good technical skills, and Gamboa having a combination of blinding speed, first class foot work, and a nice crack on his punches as well, this fight would be like a flash forward Latino version of Leonard vs. Hearns.
Arum is pushing for Garcia to fight Rocky Martinez. The good news is that fight has not been signed as of yet, so there is still a chance that Garcia vs. Gamboa can be made this year, especially since both fighters are making it known publicly that they want to fight each other. Furthermore, I believe for either one of these fighters to make it to the next level in boxing, they need each other at this point in their careers to come together and have a legendary clash.
