Last night Lion Fight 11 was held in what was easily one of the coolest venues you will ever see. From historic Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas, Muay Thai fighters from all over the world squared off under the bright casino lights. The venue not only offered a great backdrop for the fights, it also allowed thousands of visitors who were just passing by to get a glimpse of a sport that is looking to increase its visibility in the eyes of a public who have not totally embraced it yet here in the United States.
In addition to the general public who seemed to be enjoying the atmosphere, many fighters from other sports also turned out to take in the action. Among those who could be seen in attendance were Phil Baroni, King Mo, Dewey Cooper, Frank Mir and Maurice Smith.
But the focus was on the fighters in the ring. And for the most part, they did not disappoint. In the main event, Cosmo Alexandre beat Nampon in what was a fairly one-sided affair, which was reflected on the judges scorecards.
The semi-main event was much more up in the air, as fan favorite Kevin Ross lost a tough split decision to Tetsuya Yamoto in a fight that kept the crowd on their toes.
Although it wasn’t the main event, perhaps the most anticipated fight of the evening, at least for those MMA fans was the return to action for MMA superstar Cris Cyborg. And she did not disappoint, scoring a second round TKO over a game but overmatched Jennifer Colomb of France who was filling in on just 10 days notice.
Lion Fight made a brilliant move holding the card outside under the Vegas lights. The atmosphere was incredible, and it was surely great to watch on television as well. They would be wise to consider making Fremont Street a regular part of their rotation.
