Liverpool star Derry Mathews, the current Commonwealth Lightweight Champion, has signed a long-term deal with Queensberry Promotions and will make his debut for his new promoter on Saturday 7th December at the Liverpool Echo Arena.
He will now feature in a championship title fight on a star-studded card alongside brothers
Paul and Liam Smith, who defend their British Super-Middleweight and Light-Middleweight titles respectively, plus Ellesmere Port fight sensation Paul Butler, live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546).
The 30-year-old started his career with Frank Warren after winning gold at the 2000 Junior Olympics and quickly won the English and WBU World Featherweight titles and is thrilled to rejoin the Hall of Fame promoter.
Mathews said, “I’m delighted to sign with Queensberry Promotions in a deal that will see me end my career with my original promoter Frank Warren. It was the best deal put forward to me by far, no other promoter came close to what Frank and his son Francis came up with and I just couldn’t refuse. It was about being looked after and I’m really happy with the deal. I’m back in my home city and headlining on a great show which will be live on BoxNation and I can’t wait.”
Francis Warren of Queensberry Promotion said, “We’re delighted to conclude this deal with Derry and look forward to him featuring on a fantastic show in his home city at the Echo Arena on Saturday 7th December alongside the other big names of Merseyside boxing. Derry has proved himself to be one of the most exciting fighters in Britain, a fact recognised by the British Boxing Board of Control who recently nominated his rematch against Anthony Crolla as domestic fight of the year. The British lightweight division is talent-packed with great fights that can be made for Derry and we will also pursue opportunities for him on the world stage.”
The Liverpool Echo Arena show is headlined by Paul Smith’s defence of his British Super-Middleweight title against Luke Blackledge and younger brother Liam’s defence of his British Light-Middleweight title.
Paul Butler makes the first defence of his WBO Intercontinental Super-Flyweight titles as he aims to stay on track to achieve his dream of becoming Britain’s first ever world champion at the weight.
The undercard will feature Liverpool’s hot undefeated light-middleweight prospect Joe Selkirk and Ellesmere Port’s fast-rising lightweight Matty Fagan. Top unbeaten Welsh talents Craig Evans (super-featherweight) and Liam Williams (middleweight) will both feature and making his debut for Queensberry Promotions will be Stoke welterweight Josh McLaren who will be looking to make a big impression. Completing the card will be Manchester’s Liam Cullen (cruiserweight) and Ciaran McVarnock (featherweight).
