Gavin ready for hard night before Christmas

Commonwealth Welterweight Champion Frankie Gavin will defend his title against Joseph Lamptey on Saturday 21st December at the First Direct Arena in Leeds. The Birmingham ace aims to end a perfect year when he makes the third defence of the title on the show headlined by Stuart Hall’s challenge for the Vacant IBF World Bantamweight title against Vusi Malinga, live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546).

Gavin, 28, who also holds the British title, has racked up wins against Jason Welborn, Denton Vassell and David Barnes this year to win the Lonsdale belt outright and now aims to end 2013 on a high before targeting European and world honours .

Hard-hitting Lamptey, who hails from the tough fighting city of Accra in Ghana, has 16 wins from 22 fights with 11 stoppages, will be looking to cause a huge upset and dethrone the unbeaten champion.

“It’s a tough fight to end the year with and I’ll have to be at my best against Lamptey or he could wreck my plans for next year,” Said Gavin.

“He’s a hard fighter, like they all are out of Ghana, he won’t be giving me an easy night before Christmas, that’s for sure,”

“He’s won his last five fights and four have come by stoppage, plus he’s fought up at light-middleweight so when he gets in the ring he’s going to huge welterweight,”

“It’s a fight that I’ve got to win, next year is going to be another step up and I’ll be looking at the European title and a possible world title opportunity so Lamptey is a crucial fight for me and my career.”

Gavin v Lamptey is live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 547) featuring as chief support to Hall v Malinga for the Vacant IBF World Bantamweight title, plus an action packed undercard.  Join now at www.boxnation.com
