ADAM ETCHES says he’d knock Chris Eubank Jnr out if they ever fought, regardless of whether his famous father was working his corner.
On Saturday night, Eubank Jnr’s corner caused a minor storm in Newcastle due to his dad’s bizarre antics between rounds.
Wearing jodhpurs, a waistcoat and sleeveless shirt, the former WBO middleweight and super-middleweight king stood looking at his son without saying much.
The behaviour has irked many in the boxing fraternity. Etches, however, believes it was little more than a publicity stunt and he’s quite happy about it as it has reignited talk about a fight between the unbeaten pair.
“I didn’t watch it to be honest, but I’ve seen the pictures and it was just daft,” Adam, 16-0 (13 KOs), said. “It’s got people talking, though, and that’s what they wanted.
“Since Saturday, I’ve had loads of people asking me when I’m going to fight him and it’s something I’d jump at.
“If he ever fought me, it wouldn’t matter who is in his corner. He could have his dad stood there between rounds all he wants, it wouldn’t help him in the fight itself.
“I know some people will think he’s too good or too fast for me, but that’s the reason I want to fight him. It’s a chance to prove myself and I genuinely believe I can nail him.
“Nobody has really tested his chin yet. Anyone can look good when they’re having things their own way. Only a few boxers have fired back against him and he doesn’t seem to like it.
“All this posing he’s doing is all well and good when he’s not really boxing anyone, but against anyone half decent he’ll get beat doing stuff like that. Anyone fit and hungry will take his head off.”
Recently, Eubank Snr claimed that the only boxer better than his son at either middleweight or super-middleweight is Andre Ward and predicted that Chris Jnr would be able to beat hammer-fisted Kazakh Gennady Golovkin now.
For Etches, this is little more than stupid talk. Eubank Jnr hasn’t even proven himself in the UK never mind on the world stage.
“Them mentioning Golovkin is bonkers. It’s like me calling out Tyson Fury. It’ll never happen and even if it did, it wouldn’t last long,” he said.
“Every fighter thinks they’re the best in the world, but they know it’s about learning and fighting people at the right time and at the minute Golovkin could fight every British middleweight going and take them out in a round.
“Before Eubank Jnr can even start thinking about those sorts of fights, he has to face people like me and I’ll fight him anywhere he wants. There doesn’t even need to be a title on the line. I’d box him in an eight rounder tomorrow if he was up for it.”
