By Andy Clark. Kevin Mitchell put on a career best performance against Daniel Estrada to line up a mandatory title shot against WBC World Champion, Jorge Linares.
Mitchell got off to a positive start in the early rounds by using excellent footwork and head movement to nullify the longer reach of Estrada. Mitchell landed often and heavily with his dynamite left hook, uppercuts and straight rights.
The consistent landing of heavy punches took its tole on Estrada, as Mitchell secured a third round knockdown. As both fighters exchanged in the pocket, Mitchell caught Estrada clean with a solid right hook, sending Estrada to the canvas. Estrada took an eight count as the fight continued.
The middle rounds continued to be dominated by Mitchell who was treating his London faithful to a near punch perfect performance. Going into the eighth round Mitchell had clearly won every round as Estrada continued to absorb heavy punishment.
Mitchell stepped on the gas in round eight, hammering Estrada in the corner with repeated hooks and uppercuts. As Mitchell landed a savage counter uppercut, referee Ian John-Lewis waved an end to the contest, with no complaints from either Estrada or world-class trainer “Nacho” Beristáin.
