In the main event co-feature of a PBC card at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut, Peter Quillen got a tougher than expected challenge from game Australian Michael Zerafa. The first four rounds saw back and forth action with each fighter having his moments.
Zerafa was able to land clean but never hurt Quillen who didn’t stop coming forward. In the fourth round Quillen stunned Zerafa with a left hand while pushing him to the ropes. As Zerafa tried to hold on, Quillen landed a perfect straight right hand that sent Zerafa to the canvas in a heap.
The fight was stopped immediately as medical personnel rushed the ring to tend to Zerafa. The 23 year old Zerafa was conscious but left the ring on a stretcher for precautionary reasons and was taken to a local hospital.
Quillen turned his attention to Danny Jacobs who was ringside and called out his fellow Brooklynite.
“Danny Jacobs is the fight I want next.”
Quillen improved to 32-0-1 (23 ko’s) while Zerafa dropped to 17-1.
Jermall Charlo TKO3 Cornelius Bundrage
Jermall Charlo won his first world title by third round destruction over IBF Junior Middleweight Champion Cornelius Bundrage. About a minute into the fight, Charlo, who had a six inch height advantage, landed a chopping overhand right on the temple dropping Bundrage. The champ got up but the feeling ringside was that it was just a matter of time.
Charlo landed a hard straight left jab that had Bundrage on the floor in the second round. Bundrage looked all of 42 years old and had no answers.
In the third round, Charlo backed Bundrage into a corner and landed a combination that floored the champ for a third time. Late in the round Charlo landed a sweeping right hand behind Bundrage’ ear that sent the champ to the canvas for the fourth time.
Referee Johnny Calas had seen enough and waved the fight off immediately before Bundrage could get up.
Charlo improved 22-0 (17 ko’s) and looks for bigger fights at 154 lbs.
Bundrage dropped to 34-6 but said that he will continue his career.
