Long Island — October 28, 2012 — It is with the complete support and encouragement of the New York State Athletic Commission and chairwoman Melvina Lathan that Bob Duffy’s Ring Promotions has announced that the November 1 boxing card at the Plattduetsche Park Restaurant has been postponed until, Thursday, November 15. The conditions and potential fallout from Hurricane Sandy has left the promotion no other choice.
“The most important thing to us is the safety of our fighters, fans and officials,” said Duffy. “Hurricane Sandy left us no choice but to move the show. I’ve consulted with Melvina Lathan and we agreed that safety is our number one priority. No one wanted to move this show, but Mother Nature left us no choice.”
The November 15 show will also be at the Plattduetsche Park Restaurant in Franklin Square. ALL TICKETS FROM THE NOVEMBER 1 CARD WILL BE HONORED ON NOVEMBER 15.
As of Sunday, Nassau County Executive had announced a state of emergency of Nassau, site of the match. In fact, Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced a state of emergency for the entire state of New York. Mangano has also ordered a mandatory evacuation Sunday for flood- or storm-surge areas along the North and South shores of Long Island. The Long Island Rail Road, NICE bus, the city subway system and Metro-North have all announced a shut down beginning at 7 p.m. on Sunday.
“We had fighters traveling up the East Coast,” said Duffy. “We have fans that attend our fights from all over. We just cannot risk anyone’s safety at this point. We are looking at the possibility of widespread power outages and loss of government services. Moving the card was the prudent thing to do.”
The main event, an IBA Americas welterweight title fight between Tommy Rainone and Robbie Cannon, is still scheduled to go on. The entire card — featuring some of the areas best talent – remains in tact for November 15. Undefeated Mike Brooks, world-ranked Cindy Serrano, unbeaten Rich Neves, Golden Gloves champ Anthony Karperis and hard-hitting Nick Argyris are all in action.
