Yuriorkis Gamboa linked to Miami PED clinic

By Michele Emrick

According to a report on MiamiNewTimes.com, Yuriorkis Gamboa is among those athletes who have been named as recipients of performance-enhancing drugs by the now defunct Miami anti-aging clinic Biogenesis. Other athletes named include Alex Rodriguez, Melky Cabrera, Gio Gonzalez, Nelson Cruz and Bartolo Colon.

The report states this is not the first time the clinic’s chief, Anthony Bosch, has been linked to PEDs. He is the son of Pedro Publio Bosch, the doctor who was linked to Manny Ramirez when he was suspended back in 2009 for a violation of the Major League Baseball’s drug policy.

Yuriorkis Gamboa, the fast rising Cuban star, won a gold medal for that country back in the 2004 Olympics. Two years later he defected to Miami. He has since compiled a 22-0 record as a professional, winning the WBA and IBF titles in the process.

In a 2009 notebook obtained from the clinic, Anthony Bosch outlines the program he was shipping to Gamboa. Protein powders and calcium/magnesium/zinc compounds were among the items, along with a six-day-a-week HGH regime, IGF-1, and a cream with 20 percent testosterone.

The notebook also mentions that Gamboa’s next bout is scheduled for April against Brandon Rios and states, “Start clean-up Dec. 1” -presumably allowing him time to pass any tests he may have had to undergo. That fight with Rios was eventually canceled, however, Yuriorkis Gamboa won two other fights that January and February by TKO and KO.

The records were given to the New Times by an employee who was working at Biogenesis before it closed last month. Those records are very clear in explaining the real business of the clinic: selling PEDs, from testosterone, to steroids, to HGH. Interviews with several customers as well as a pair of former employees back up the stories told by the files, payment records and written records kept by Anthony Bosch himself.
