Ali’s friends, family respond to health concerns

A spokesman for the family of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali released a statement responding to comments that were made by the brother of Ali earlier in the week to the National Enquirer.

Rahman Ali was quoted in that article as saying Ali was in declining health and nearing death.  He also added that he was not receiving the appropriate care and attention that he was in need of.

The statement, released Thursday evening said, “Unfortunately Rahman Ali was led astray in his interviews with less than reputable publications.  The Ali family is disappointed in the sensational journalism that printed these false stories.  Rest assured that Muhammad is doing great.  Muhammad, Lonnie, and the entire Ali family very much appreciate the support from their friends around the world.”

The following statements are from some of the people closest to Muhammad Ali and were also part of the same news release made available to the media.

“If I had Parkinson’s I would wish I was cared for as well as Muhammad.  I believe he gets excellent care.” – Dr. Abraham Lieberman, physician of Muhammad for 25 years, sees Muhammad professionally every other week.

“I have known Muhammad and Lonnie their entire marriage.  As the world knows, Muhammad is the kindest and most compassionate man in the world and Lonnie is a direct reflection of him.  I’ve always said if reincarnation is possible I would want to come back as Muhammad because Lonnie treats him like a King.” – John Ramsey, personal friend to Muhammad Ali and Lonnie for 30 plus years.

“A team of Emory physicians sees Muhammad Ali and Lonnie Ali on a regular basis and we are in touch by phone constantly. We have been treating Muhammad since 1994 and there is no basis to these allegations.” -Dr. Mahlon DeLong, Professor of Neurology, Emory University Medical Center.
