It appears the issue that posed a threat to the fight between Nonito Donaire and Guillermo Rogondeaux has been resolved.
The WBO/Ring Magazine and WBC Diamond Belt super bantamweight champion Donaire had suggested he may bow out of the proposed fight with WBA champion Rigondeaux if the drug testing situation could not be resolved.
Bob Arum, head of top Rank, said that the problem was that Rigondeaux had initially balked at signing the drug protocol, because it was written in English and he could not understand it. Nonito Donaire took the refusal to mean that Rigondeaux had no intention of signing the Voluntary Anti Doping Association (VADA) agreement.
According to Arum, however, the situation has been resolved. The document has been translated into Spanish and now Guillermo Rigondeaux is ready to move forward.
Nonito Donaire is on his way to New York as is Guillermo Rigondeaux for the scheduled news conference on Thursday.
Donaire, one of the fastest rising stars in the sport had originally threatened to skip the press conference since he believed Rigondeaux was backing of his agreement to undergo random testing. Donaire, as has been widely reported, agreed to year-round testing in an effort to help clean up the image of the sport.
Rigondeaux is scheduled to sign the agreement while in New York, now that it is in Spanish, allowing him to know exactly what he is signing. According to his manager, Gary Hyde, his fighter had never refused to take VADA testing.
The mega-fight is scheduled for April 14 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
