Alfredo “Perro” Angulo was welcomed back at a press conference on Tuesday, put together by Golden Boy Promotions after being held for 8 months in the El Centro Immigration detention center. Angulo was in great spirits as he sported a full set of hair and made his way around the compact dining room at the La Serenata de Garibaldi restaurant greeting members of the media.
Angulo addressed the media and spoke at length about his stay in the detention center which he admitted was not the best of circumstances. From an unfair warden in charge to harsh conditions, Angulo waited out 7 months to be able to finally be cleared and be able to return to the United States.
“I’m very happy to see you all again. It was pretty hard because for 7 months locked up and doing routines was very frustrating. I didn’t think it would be that bad but sincerely, it took me 3-4 days to get accustomed to not being in a daily routine,” said Angulo.
An interesting fact that was brought up by him was that he chose to spend his time at the detention center in general population. He was given the option to be isolated and away from everyone else but Angulo said he refused to sign any paperwork that would separate him from rest.
While Angulo was not a criminal, the way he was treated was not too different the way an inmate is treated in jail or prison.
“You wake up at 5 in the morning, brush your teeth, eat, come back, 2 hours of yard work, come back and be locked up all day. At 1:30 they do a head count. At 9:30pm they do another head count. At 12:30am they do a head count and at 5 in the morning they do another” revealed Angulo.
The food situation wasn’t any better as Angulo had a hard time the first few days adjusting not only to being away from his family, but getting food that wasn’t very nutritious.
“The first few days I wouldn’t eat any breakfast. I only got used to eating cornflakes. The eggs I didn’t like because they were eggs made from powder so I wouldn’t eat it. That was my breakfast: cornflakes and fruit” said Angulo with a smile that showed relief those days were over.
While detained, Angulo did receive visitors that included members of the media and close friends but they weren’t many. And while many may have forgotten about “Perro”, he holds no resentment towards anyone who didn’t come visit him. In fact, he preferred not to be seen by even his family as that’s not a memory of him he wanted to be on people’s minds.
“I didn’t want any of my family to have that memory of me, especially my daughter. Looking at me through glass is something ridiculous that I never wanted them to have in their memory”.
Everything seems to be on track now for Angulo as they will make sure he gets a tune up fight or two and then continue their journey to a world title. And if anyone was wondering if the inactivity and time in the detention center will prevent Angulo from fighting at 154, think again.
“I think that’s no problem with the weight as you can see. Many expected to see me fat but I think I’m a natural 154 pounder” said Angulo.
It was great to see Angulo back from a living hell and getting everything back in order as it should be. The same way he was able to battle and overcome this situation is the same reason we’ve come to love him as a fighter in the ring; he never gives up and always gives it his all.
