Alvarez vs Trout “99% done”

For weeks now, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Saul Alvarez have been keeping the boxing world guessing over who they will be fighting on May 4 in Las Vegas.  Finally, at least according to a tweet sent out by Alvarez, we have an answer to one half of the equation.  At least a 99 percent chance, according to the trainer of Austin Trout.

Saul Alvarez, the WBC lightweight champion tweeted “Canelo vs Trout may 4 MGM” late on Friday.

“I think he jumped the gun just a bit,” said Trout’s trainer Louie Burke. “But the fight appears to be about 99 percent set. We’re very hopeful and we feel we’re the leading contender for this fight.”

Prior to that, Alvarez told Rene Umanzor of “The Record” that “Austin Trout is the only real opponent.”

Austin Trout is the WBA world champion at 154 pounds.  His record stands at an impressive 26-0.  Meanwhile, Saul Alvarez is 41-0 and holds the WBC version of the light middleweight title.  If the two in fact do meet, it would be with both titles on the line.

Trout was lightly regarded prior to his lopsided victory over Miguel Cotto last year in New York.  Following that victory, he finally got some of the recognition he felt he had earned but had never been given.

“This will be another huge opportunity for Austin,” Burke said. “We waited a long time for the Cotto fight, and now we are on the doorstep of the next big opportunity. Hopefully, something will get finalized in the next couple of days. I know Canelo has tweeted this out, but it has to go through Golden Boy Promotions before the deal is officially done.”

If the two face off, it will be another chance for Trout to claim a title from an Alvarez.  He won his current title by defeating Canelo’s brother Rigoberto in early 2011.  This would be an opportunity for Alvarez to gain a little revenge.
