As we all wait for the pieces to fall into place for the upcoming mega-card to take place on May 4, one potential match up that has been discussed would pit Saul Canelo against Alfredo Angulo.
“That is a rumor that has been out there for a long time. I have heard that rumor for two years now. Of course I would like that fight. I will fight anybody but I don’t think that fight is going to happen. I leave that (choosing opponents) up to Oscar (De La Hoya). There are a lot of good fighters in my division and good fights that can happen,” Angulo replied.
The card to take place in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand will feature both Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Saul Alvarez. That much we know for certain. What is less clear is who Floyd Mayweather and Canelo will be squaring off against.
As for Alfredo Angulo, he has made clear he plans to return to action this spring, whether it is on the May 4 card, or on some other venue and date. A rematch with James Kirkland is another possibility he has entertained.
In their prior meeting which took place in November of 2011, Angulo floored Kirkland in the first, and almost finished the job before the end of the round. James Kirkland was able to recover, stopping Alfredo Angulo in the sixth after he had punched himself out.
“I have no problem facing Kirkland again. Like I said I leave that up to Oscar. If he says ‘you should fight Kirkland again’ then let’s do it. I don’t say no to anyone,” Angulo stated.
“I have been training and working very hard with Virgil Hunter. We were told that my next fight will probably be in March or April,” he continued.
Whether he takes on Saul Alvarez or another opponent, it is obvious he is ready to get back into action as quickly as possible. In the next few days we should finally start getting some answers.
