Anthony Yigit has enlisted the help of Swedish boxing icon and television personality Paolo Roberto ahead of his historic European Super Lightweight title fight against Sandor Martin on September 30 at the Solnahallen in Stockholm.
All media are welcome to attend as the former two-time World title challenger and the current European Champion conduct an open sparring session in Stockholm.
Sparring is a vital part of any fighter’s preparations, and Yigit says he is excited to share the ring with Roberto and to see whether the 48 year-old still has what it takes to compete with a current champion.
‘’I grew up watching Paolo Roberto,’’ said Yigit. ‘’He was a great fighter who really helped put Swedish boxing on the map. He was a big inspiration for me. He came from a similar background to me. We’re both from the streets. He showed by coming from nothing to where he is today that anything is possible.
‘’I’m excited to spar with him. I know he is a busy man so I’m grateful he’s agreed to help me. He’s a southpaw, like my opponent, and he knows what to do to beat a southpaw. It will be interesting to see how much he has left in his arms. I think he is going to want to show that he’s still got it and that he can compete with me.’’
Yigit became the first Swedish boxer to win the European title in thirty years when he defeated British boxer Lenny Daws in February, and his maiden defence will be the first time in over fifty years that the European title has been contested on Swedish soil following Bo Hogberg’s unsuccessful attempt at Sandro Mazzinghi super welterweight strap at Johanneshov on October 11, 1966.
