Ashley Theophane believes title opportunities may be just around the corner

By Jody Kohn

Ashley Theophane has been around the game for awhile now, and he has had more than his share of big fights.  Still the talented Brit believes he has a few more left in him.  In fact, he is certain he isn’t far from having the opportunity to compete for a world title.

But first, he must get by his opponent this weekend when he takes on Miguel Zuniga as part of the ShoBox card that features many of his TMT teammates. A win here and it will be four consecutive victories Theophane has rattled off since he lost to Pablo Cesar Cano in September of last year.  Should he look impressive, it will be easy to make a case that he should be among those considered for any of the titles held in the light welterweight division.

As for Theophane, he knows his time is now and he needs to make a move if he ever hopes to realize his dream of becoming a world champion.

We caught up with Ashley just a few hours before he heads to Texas to see what he thinks about this fight, as well as where he sees his career going in the next year or so.

Heavy Hitters in the Land of the High Rollers

Out of all of the venues across the country there are few that would feasibly be able to host a boxing match, and as such many are consigned to the few rings set up around the country, repurposed convention centres and community centres. There’s one type of popular boxing venue that rises head and shoulders above the rest in terms of matching the glittering, nail-biting flavour that boxing exudes, however; the casino. There’s loads of upcoming bouts taking place in casinos this time of the year- here are some of those we’re looking forward most to.

Khan vs. Alexander

Taking place on Saturday December the 13th at the MGM Grand in Vegas, this fight is set to be a blisteringly exciting one, featuring two huge names in the boxing world, Amir Khan and Devon Alexander. Khan’s exploits are well known; a two time world champion having won the WBA, WBA (Super) and IBF Light Welterweight titles, Khan, who hails from Bolton, England, has had a glittering career that began spectacularly when a 17 year old Khan became the youngest ever Olympic boxing medallist. Facing Khan is Devon Alexander, another star in the field who is a similar WBC and IBF Light Welterweight Champ. The 27 year old American from St. Louis is known as “Alexander the Great”, and for good reason- his early career formed a winning streak that could rival the ancient general!

Tamayo vs. Cuellar

On Saturday the 20th of December the Little Creek Casino Resort at Shelton, Washington will be hosting the battle between Ruben Tamayo and Jesus Marcelo Andres Cuellar. Argentine Cuellar, the current interim WBA Featherweight Champion, has a 25-1 winning ratio, compared to Mexican southpaw Tamayo’s 25-4. Maicela vs. Perez

Coming to the Chumash Casino Resort at Santa Ynez, California on January 9th, Lightweight contenders Johnathan Maicelo and Darleys Perez will be locking gloves in what’s set to be a wonderfully entertaining fight. Columbian fighter Perez currently is 31-1 with 20 knockouts, compared to Peuvian Maicelo’s 21-1 with 12 knockouts. These two are some of the world’s top lightweight fighters, and as such both are reported to be positively salivating over the prospect of a win. Don’t miss this one!
