Boxer suspended following his dive against Ray Edwards

Ray Edwards never recorded a sack as easy as the one he got last Saturday night in his boxing match in North Dakota.

The former Minnesota Vikings and Atlanta Falcons defensive end recorded 30 sacks while playing in the NFL, although all of those required him to at least make contact with his opponent.  Just 13 seconds into his fight against Nicholas Capes, a last minute replacement, Capes hit the canvas despite never taking a shot.

That was the determination of North Dakota’s fight commissioner after reviewing the footage of the incident.  He suspended the Iowa boxer after saying it was evident that Capes took a dive just moments after the opening bell.

“As we move ahead, we’ll take appropriate action as the investigation review unfolds,” Jaeger told The Forum.

The promoter of the event, Cory Rapacz, said that there were a couple of no-shows for the fight.  Ultimately, Capes agreed to step in against Ray Edwards.  However, according to Rapocz, Capes had no idea what he was in for.  He was a cruiserweight going into battle with Edwards who was a heavyweight.

“I feel terrible for him,” Rapacz told WDAY-TV. “(Capes) got scared and looked for a way out.”

Ray Edwards was released by the Falcons in 2011 and took up boxing following his football career.  He is not suspected of having any part in the incidents that took place.

Virgil Hill, a North Dakota native, made an appearance at the event, but that was not enough for some fans who were angered at paying $50 for the fights.
