Boxing Scoop: Cotto, Klitschko and more

*Huck offers to step in against Povetkin after Rahman injures hand

Hasim Rahman (50-7-2, 41 KOs) injured his right wrist and will not be fighting WBA regular heavyweight champion, Alexander Povetkin (24-0, 16 KOs). The championship bout was to take place on July 14 in Germany. WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck 34-2-1, 25 KOs) has offered his services, but Povetkin’s manager, Vladimir Hryunov, explained that the fight cannot happen because Huck is not ranked in the top ten by the WBA. Huck and Povetkin battled to a close controversial decision won by Povetkin back in February.

*Cotto returning to MSG

Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30KOs) will be returning to Madison Square Garden in New YorK City, but it is unclear, who he will be fighting. This is according to Cotto’s legal adviser Gabriel Penagaricano. There were rumors last week that Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KOs) was to be the opponent. December 1 is the likely return date for Cotto.

*Edwin Rodriguez returns to HBO
USBA super middleweight champion Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez (21-0-0, 14 KOs) will fight Jason “Monstruo” Escalera (13-0-1, 12 KOs) on September 29 at Foxwoods Resort & Casino . This will be the the second straight fight on HBO for Rodriguez. In his last fight, Rodriguez fought Don George on HBO as a co-headliner with Sergio Martinez’s middleweight championship bout against Matthew Macklin. Rodriguez won a ten round unanimous decision. The fight with Escalera will be scheduled for ten rounds and will be part of a tripleheader.

* Vitali Klitschko to defend title against Manuel Charr
WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko, (44-2, 40 KOs) will defend his title against Manuel “Diamond Boy“ Charr, (21-0, 11 KOs) in Moscow, Russia at the Olimpiyski Sports Arena on September 8. The Lebanon born Charr is ranked #7 by the WBC. About 30,000 or more people, are expected to attend the event at one of the largest indoor arenas in all of Europe. If Klitschko becomes the mayor of Kiev in the upcoming elections, the fight with Charr could become his final bout.

*Chambers undergoes bicep surgery, hopes to return soon
Eddie Chambers had surgery performed on his bicep. The injury occurred in his fight against Tomasz Adamek last month.

This is what Chambers had to say about the injury…..

“At the end of the first round I felt something rip. I remember thinking ‘Hey, that didn’t feel right.’ It turns out I the tore a tendon that connects my bicep to the bone. I am having surgery to repair that.”

It is not known when Chambers will make his ring return. He wants to get back in the ring as soon as possible.
