Golota faces deportation
Former heavyweight title challenger, Andrew Golota could be facing deportation to his native Poland. Golota’s problems began when he applied for U.S. citizenship, this is according to the Chicago Tribune. After applying, his past convictions came to light. The Polish boxer plead guilty in two separate cases, one being impersonation of a police officer, and the other was for possessing unregistered firearms. The latter incident led to deportation proceedings.
Mariola Golota, the wife of Andrew Golota, who is also his attorney had this to say…
“People think athletes and celebrities should be treated more harshly. The proceedings are a big, black cloud over the family.”
Golota has spent the last 21 years as a permanent resident in the United States. “The Powerful Pole”, who’s known more for his in the ring meltdowns, than for any victories that he achieved, fought a who’s who in the heavyweight division from the time he burst onto the scene in june of 1996 when he had recognized heavyweight champion, Riddick Bowe all but out. Shockingly, Golota couldn’t help repeatedly fouling the champ with intentional low blows causing referee Wayne Kelly, to disqualify him, setting up a riot that won’t be forgotten any time soon.
Other notable fighters he fought are Lennox Lewis, Mike Tyson,Chris Byrd,John Ruiz, Lamont Brewster and Tomazs Adamek.
*’Canelo’ Alvarez sweepstakes update
Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez will now have to look for another foe for his September 15 scheduled championship fight. On Saturday, his latest penciled in opponent, Victor Ortiz , suffered a broken jaw and a loss to Josesito Lopez . Ortiz is now scratched for September 15th. His first scheduled opponent, James Kirkland got the nod, but he asked for too much loot. Paul Willliams signed to be the man in the opposite corner after Kirkland refused, but Williams was involved in a horrible motorcycle accident. Now there are new names being tossed around, who are eager to take the fight. Among the fighters hoping to win the ‘Canelo’ sweepstakes, are WBA regular jr. middleweight champion Austin “No Doubt” Trout, and former WBO welterweight champion Carlos “El Indio” Quintana. This writer wonders if Golden Boy heard how badly Erislandy Lara wants to fight the red freckled face Mexican? That fight should be easy to make for Golden Boy, since they promote both fighters.
*Povetkin-Rahman fight will now be in Germany
WBA regular heavyweight champion, Alexander Povetkin (24-0, 16 KOs) will now fight former world heavyweight champion, Hasim Rahman (50-7-2, 41 KOs) at the Sporthalle Hamburg in Germany instead of West Ham United in London on July 14th. The switch of locations had to do with the time slot. German TV network ARD, who televises many of Povetkin fights, had a conflict with the time frame. Another problem occurring was that the Povetkin-Rahman fight would of possibly taken place in front of an almost empty stadium due to licensing conditions at West Ham United because of the start time policy. David Haye versus Derrick Chisora, was to be the main event bout after the Povetkin-Rahman fight.
Ortiz has surgery on broken jaw, wants rematch
Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22KOs) had surgery earlier this week to repair his broken jaw that he suffered in his fight against Josesito Lopez (30-4, 18KOs), Saturday night at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles. According to his manager Rolando Arellano, Ortiz has already asked for a rematch. There is in fact, a rematch clause in his contract.
This is what Rolando Arellano told BoxingScene.com…
“He went into surgery and the jaw was broken in two places. There was a double break. The first break and then several punches later there was a second break. They had to put a titanium steel piece of bar in it and three screws in it. I came in and talked to the doctor. The doctor told me it would be wired shut for two weeks and probably about four to six months until it is fully healed. The jaw will be stronger than before because of the titanium.” The doctor told us that if we didn’t get him to the hospital right away, he could bleed out. What that means is f****ing die from lack of blood.”
Arellano claimed that Ortiz wrote down on a piece of paper, that he wants a rematch. A letter addressing Golden Boy Promotions, that Ortiz wants to exercise his contracted rematch clause, was going to be sent by Arellano yesterday.
