The scheduled championship bout between WBA featherweight champion (36-4, 23 KOs) and number one contender, Mikey Garcia (28-0, 24 KOs) is now canceled. Caballero and the fight’s promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz, could not agree on a set date for the fight. July 28th was the original date that Caballero preferred, but Lewkowicz wanted to push the fight back to September 7. “Pelenchin” has not fought since December of last year and was anxious to get back in the ring. Lewkowicz does not promote either Caballero or Garcia. He became involved when he won the WBA purse bid.
This is what Caballero told Pro Boxing Insider (translated into English)….
“Well, you all know now, that the fight with Mikey Garcia is a no go. I do not know why they did not accept the fight, but everything has a purpose. I will keep waiting in open arms, to whoever wants to fight for my 126 pound world title. Now its my turn to see what happened today, but everything happens for a reason. I know with God first, my path is bright. For the fans, I hope to bring them a mega or great fight of Celestino Caballero soon.”
Mikey Garcia, who has been mostly quiet about the situation, told this to Pro Boxing Insider….
“Am not sure what the whole details are, or what is holding it back. All I know is what I’ve been reading and hearing from different websites. I signed my contract to fight on July 28th at Fantasy Springs in Indio(California) against Caballero. He also signed a contract. Then I haven’t heard anything else officially from any people regarding the change of date, or venue, or anything like that. All I know is what I read and heard online. I have to wait my turn and wait for my opportunity to really come. Am patient, like I said, I understand this part of boxing.”
