The off-again, on-again negotiations between WBA featherweight Celestino “Pelenchín” Caballero (36-4, 23KOs), and number one contender challenger Mikey Garcia (28-0, 24KOs), has hit yet another stumbling block. The first date set for the championship fight was to be on July 28th in Indio, California and Telefutura was going to televised the event. In order to get more television exposure, promoter Sampson Lewkowicz planed to move the fight to Showtime. The date was moved to September 7 and the new venue was the Hard Rock Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.
Caballero was unpleased to learn that the fight was moved to September 7 because of his recent inactivity. December of last year was the last time Caballero stepped into a ring. Mikey Garcia’s patience might have also ran out and could be considering a fight with WBO featherweight champion, Orlando Salido. Since no contracts has been signed, Garcia is free to fight anyone. Sampson Lewkowicz does not promote either fighter. Lewkowicz became involved in the fight when he won the WBA purse bid.
