Celestino Caballero to return on April 20 in Panama

Celestino Caballero will make his long awaited return to action on April 20 in his native Panama.  “Pelenchin” will square off with the undefeated WBC International featherweight champion Viorel Simion (16-0, 7 KO’s) for the WBC Silver Featherweight title in a 12-round clash.

A former 2-division world champion, Caballero has been out of action for over a year following a series of contract and promotional conflicts.  He vacated his WBA Featherweight title last year in the midst of the turmoil and has since been declared the #1 Featherweight fighter by the WBC.

The winner will become the mandatory challenger for the current WBC champ, Daniel Ponce de Leon.  First, however, Ponce de Leon must get by Jayson Velez in New York.  In 2005, Celestino Caballero beat Daniel Ponce de Leon by a wide unanimous decision, giving the Mexican fighter his first loss as a pro.

At 5′ 11″ Caballero presents a unique challenge for anyone in his division.  That height has led many to consider him the most avoided fighter in boxing.  However, as he advances in age, the long layoff may adversely affect him.  Never one to back down from a challenge, Caballero is willing to face just about anyone.

“I’d fight Ponce de León or Mikey García, if they are willing to take the risk,” said Caballero during his training in Panama.

Viorel Simon is ranked #3 by the WBC and hopes to derail Celestino Caballero in his attempt to recapture a title and secure the shot against Daniel Ponce de Leon for himself.  Caballero is scheduled to return to Las Vegas and resume training with Jeff Mayweather in preparation for the fight.
