UK boxer Amir Khan gave American fighter Luis Collazo a real boxing lesson in Las Vegas last week – outpointing his rival with ease and looking like he’s set up the dream fight with the best fighter of his generation Floyd Mayweather.
Khan proved himself to be much too fast and too powerful for Collazo. He also maintained his discipline throughout the fight which has previously been his undoing. Khan put Collazo on the canvas in the fourth – then two times more in the 10th round.
The judges had the fight 117-106, 119-104, and 119-104 in Amir Khan’s favor.
This victory now puts Amir Khan right back on target for a shot at American boxing legend Floyd Mayweather – who convincingly beat Marcos Maidana on the same card at the Las Vegas MGM Grand.
Khan is ten years Mayweather’s junior and believes he has the style of boxing that could really trouble the undefeated five-division world champ – who has won eight world titles in his time and is, arguably, the greatest all-round fighter ever.
The bookmakers don’t agree. As things stand, Floyd Mayweather is around 1/6 to beat Khan if and when they fight – with Betfair, the world’s foremost gambling exchange. This is significant because there is no traditional bookmaker involved – so Betfair tends to attract punters with real in-depth sporting expertise.
Khan is around 4-1 with Betfair – so the market doesn’t think Mayweather is completely unbeatable and his advancing years may just be catching up with him; though it has to be said there was little sign of this in the Marcos Maidana fight.
Khan hadn’t fought for over a year before his Collazo bout. His previous fight was a less than convincing win by points over Mexican light welterweight Julio Diaz in Sheffield last April. Nevertheless, this was a convincing victory over the 33 year-old American on his home soil – the 33-year-old southpaw Collazo only narrowly lost to Ricky Hatton back in 2006 and was seen by many pundits as a real threat to Khan.
Let’s hope, then, that we get the dream Khan-Mayweather bout soon – and let’s hope it’s another classic whichever way it goes.
