Liverpool hero and British boxing great John Conteh met up with two of the new generation of Scouse stars Kevin Satchell and Jazza Dickens in their home city today.
The former British, Commonwealth, European and WBC World Light-Heavyweight Champion and superstar of his day visited Satchell and Dickens in their Red Triangle Gym to give them words of advice ahead of their big title fights at the Liverpool Echo Arena on Friday 6th March.
Undefeated flyweight ace Satchell looks to add the Vacant IBF International title to his British, Commonwealth and European belts, before a world title challenge later this year.
Whilst super-bantamweight star Dickens makes a second attempt to capture the Lonsdale belt when he takes on Barnsley’s Josh Wale for the vacant title.
Conteh said, “They’re great lads and I hope they do well on Friday 6th March at the Echo Arena which is a fantastic show with the best Liverpool prospects and champions. Liverpool right now seems to be the fight centre in Britain and the city should go out and support these guys,”
“These young men have the hunger and desire to became champions and proudly represent Liverpool on the world stage and they remind me of me in my early days climbing to the top. It’s a hard sport but I have every confidence they will get there.”
“Kevin has gone the traditional route like I did, British, Commonwealth and European and for him after this fight, it should be the world title next. He’s in a hard weight division, those little guys from Thailand, Philippines and Mexico are a hundred miles an hour in the, but I can see him flying the flag for Britain,”
“Jazza is a super prospect and I’ll be keeping an eye on him. He’s hungry to get the British title around his waist and I think once he does that he’ll have the confidence to go onwards and upwards.”
Satchell said, “John’s an all time British great and to listen to him and his advice will help my career and future ambitions no end.”
Dickens added, “If I achieve half of what John achieves I’ll be proud, but I want to go all the way to a world title and I believe that I’ve got what it takes.”
The IBF World Super-Flyweight Championship between Zolani Tete v Paul Butler headlines Mersey Boys that also features Liam Smith’s Vacant WBO Intercontinental Light-Middleweight title challenge; Kevin Satchell’s defence of the European Flyweight Championship; Jazza Dickens v Josh Wale for the Vacant British Super-Bantamweight Championship; Jack Catterall’s defence of the WBO European Light-Welterweight Championship; plus the return of Tom Stalker in an eight-round contest and Stephen Lewis in a six-round contest.
