The newly unified Jr. welterweight champion, Danny Garcia (24-0, 15 KOs), and four division champion, Mexican icon, Erik Morales (52-8, 36 KOs), will do battle once again. This is according to Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer. Garcia and Morales fought this past March, with Garcia winning a 12 round unanimous decision and taking Morales’s WBC welterweight title. The rematch is set for October 20 at the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
This is what Richard Schaefer told BoxingScene.com….
“When he gave the opportunity to Danny, it was not the mandatory, so when he gave him the opportunity he wanted to make sure that if things didn’t go his way that he would have the opportunity back, and that’s what this is. The first fight was a terrific fight. Morales, he had issues, he had surgery. He feels confident, and that’s why he was pushing for the rematch, [because he believes] that this time he will beat Danny Garcia. It’s going to be his opportunity. I know one thing for sure, given the way that both guys fight, that’s its going to be another one of those toe to toe battles that we love to do. Morales really, really wants it and Danny Garcia is a very exciting fighter. You put those two together and it’s going to be an exciting night and the kind of night that Brooklyn boxing deserves.”
Garcia is coming off a surprising fourth round knockout of Amir Khan, who was the favorite to win the unification Jr. welterweight fight on July 14th. The bout between Garcia and Morales is billed as “Brooklyn Pride”. New York City area fighters, such as WBA welterweight champion, Paulie Malignaggi, former Jr. welterweight title challenger Dmitriy Salita, middleweights Peter Quillin, Danny Jacobs and Bronx native Eddie Gomez, are said to be on the undercard. Showtime has the rights to the rematch, while the first fight was televised by HBO.
