Danny Garcia/Lucas Matthysse a done deal for “The One” co-feature?

By: Albert Alvarez

Rumor has it that Danny Garcia has agreed to face Lucas Matthysse on the undercard of the Mayweather/Canelo mega fight card on September 14th. If this rumor is indeed true, then ‘’The One’’ fight card will without a doubt in my mind do Godzilla type numbers. I have reached out to some of my sources to find out if this fight is indeed official. As of this morning, I have yet to hear anything concrete. But then again, in this sport, I always say that nothing is for real until both fighters are in the ring standing across from one another.

Even without Garcia/Matthysse on the bill, Mayweather/Canelo will do somewhere between 1.5-2 million pay per view buys. But I feel that with the possible addition of Garcia/Matthysse, the card could indeed be in the neighborhood of 2-2.6 million pay per view buys. Truth be told, in many fight fans eyes, a Swift vs. The Machine clash is viewed as being a more entertaining fight than the main course of Money May vs. Canelo.

I would agree with that, especially if Floyd stays moving on his wheels the same way he did in his last fight against Guerrero. If Floyd stays on the move, Canelo will have a whole lot to deal with. Canelo is not a pressure fighter by nature, and there is a big reason for that. As the big fight nears, I will explain a little more in detail as to why that is.

But in a Swift (26-0)/Machine (34-2) fight, a straight up war is what will be on display for the world to see. For months now, Garcia was being trashed by boxing heads as avoiding Matthysse.  That will no longer be the case if this fight is indeed a done deal.

My early pick is that Danny Garcia will beat Lucas Matthysse to the punch. Matthysse is a monster with scary power, but Garcia himself also seems to be very heavy handed. Matthysse is probably the nastiest puncher that I have seen since Edwin Valero, but unlike Valero, Lucas to me does not deliver every punch as fluently as Valero once did. Danny’s mind is slightly sharper to me, and his ability to punch with his opponent will be the difference maker in this one. I feel that Danny realizes that if he waits a second too late to strike, then the Machine will eat him alive.

Don’t get me wrong, I would also like to see Angel Garcia eat some humble pie with extra servings. But in studying both fighters, my eyes see more flaws in Matthysse than I did in studying Garcia. Then again, this is one of those fights where a single punch can change the makeup of the fight at any given moment.
