Emanuel Steward, owner of Detroit’s legendary Kronk Gym, has passed away. One of boxing’s legendary trainers, he was 68 years old. After weeks of speculation on his health, his passing has finally been confirmed.
Although the cause of death was not disclosed, Victori Kirton, Steward’s executive assistant, says Steward died Thursday in a Chicago hospital.
A member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, Steward made his name training Thomas Hearns at the Kronk gym in Detroit. His work with Hearns opened the doors for him to work with many champion boxers including Lennox Lewis for a significant portion of his championship reign. He also worked with current heavyweight king Wladamir Klitschko as recently as July.
Besides owning the Kronk Gym and training a number of successful boxers, Steward also worked as an analyst HBO. Our sympathies go out to the family of Steward.
