In the opinion of Eric Morel (46-3, 23 KO’s), his great performance against Abner Mares is the main reason that he was able to secure a second title shot in less than a year. Morel vows to do everything in his power defeat Leo Santa Cruz (20-0-1, 11 KO’s) for the IBF’s bantamweight champion on September 15th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The bout is taking place on the Showtime televised quadrupleheader, which features Saul Alvarez-Josesito Lopez in the main event.
“There are things in life. I think even though I lost to Mares, [they] understand that I gave a good show and that is why [they are] giving me the opportunity to fight again for a world title. And this time I want to take full advantage. These opportunities do not come every day,” Morel said.
Morel said he feels more comfortable at 118 pounds. A few months ago he dropped a twelve round decision to Abner Mares, but the fight took place at super bantamweight.
“This is my weight, where I made great impressions. Since 2007 I’ve been fighting at 118-pounds and this is my real weight. Santa Cruz is young and fast and I saw him fighting with Carita Lopez. But he is good fighter, who throws a lot of punches but we’re going to take him to school,” Morel said.
