Floyd Mayweather says Canelo is next!

Just moments ago, on his official Twitter account, Floyd Mayweather announced his plans for his next fight, which no doubt will please millions of fans.

“I chose my opponent for September 14th and it’s Canelo Alvarez. I’m giving the fans what they want. It will be at the MGM Grand,”  Floyd tweeted.

The announcement comes as a shock to many who for a variety of reasons felt the fight would never come together, despite it being the contest that most want to see at this point.

The size difference is one of the obstacles many felt were standing in the way.  Despite Mayweather being a champion at 154 pounds, he weighs in at less than the limit when he competes in that division.  Canelo, on the other hand, is very large for the division, usually weighing significantly over the limit by the time he steps in the ring.  Canelo has said previously he will only fight Floyd at that weight, so it will be interesting to see if Mayweather will agree to fight there, or if Canelo will be forced to drop to a lower weight.

For many others, particularly those who are not fond of the undefeated fighter, they feel that Floyd Mayweather has made a career of cherry picking opponents, choosing not to compete with those at the top of their game.  That is why they contend a fight with Manny Pacquiao was never made, and why, until now, a fight with Canelo has never been made.  If the Twitter post becomes reality, that thinking will obviously go out the window.

Although his undefeated streak is almost as long as that of Floyd Mayweather, the 42-0 Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has certainly not been tested by a long string of quality opponents.  In his last outing, he was able to take a unanimous decision from Austin Trout, in a fight that was much closer than the judges sitting ringside would have you believe.  Nonetheless, it proved that Canelo could  hang in there with other champions.  Besides Trout, Canelo has defeated Shane Mosley, Kermit Cintron and Josesito Lopez among others.

Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.
