Following the loss of Adrien Broner to Marcos Maidana this past week, feedback came in fast and furious as many people were quick to critique the performance of Broner. Two of the people who gave their opinions were of particular interest to Broner’s trainer Mike Stafford.
Floyd Mayweather Sr. and Roger Mayweather were very critical of the game plan and strategy employed. Floyd Sr. even went so far as to suggest that Broner should look him up so that he could fix the flaws in his game. Obviously, that didn’t sit well with Stafford, who fired shots back in an interview with FightHype.
“Floyd Mayweather and them only had Floyd. I didn’t see that Floyd and them had champions in their gym,” Stafford said.
The implication was clear. Floyd Mayweather Sr. has not successfully brought along any fighters he did not inherit other than his son.
He also went on to deny that Broner copies the style of Floyd Mayweathe Jr., a charge which the brothers claimed led to his demise. Stafford says the shoulder roll and defensive tactics Broner uses are the product of his Cincinnati training and the fighters he worked with there, rather than an imitation of the legendary Floyd Mayweather shoulder roll.
When we caught up with Floyd Sr. outside the Mayweather Boxing Club to get his response to the comments of Stafford, as you can imagine, Floyd stood his ground, refusing to back off his statements. in fact, he was more than willing to expand on them.
Who knows where things go from here. Be sure to stay tuned to PBI, as we will keep the readers updated if things escalate from here, or if cooler heads prevail.
Here is the original interview that includes Floyd’s thoughts on the fight.
