Carl Froch risks a career-ending defeat if he doesn’t take seriously the challenges of two young British stars making their way up the ranks of professional boxing.
Both George Groves and James DeGale have impressed over the early stages of their careers and have mooted future bouts with Froch as a means of rocketing up the boxing ladder. Yet Froch, at 35, appears more interested in taking down bigger and better opponents and many boxing betting fans expect him to land a clash with André Ward by this time next year.
If Froch keeps his eyes on Ward he risks suffering defeat at the hands of Groves, who is likely to become a mandatory opponent for the IBF and WBA super-middleweight titles before the year is out. Even if Froch fights Groves he’ll have one eye on Ward and that is dangerous against an up-and-coming star with a 19-0 record and British belts.
Groves has the potential to be what Froch is now; who is turn always wanted to fight Joe Calzaghe but never got the chance. Many boxing punters on the Bet365 site agree Froch would have pushed Calzaghe to the limits and may even have ended the Welshman’s unbeaten record in the sport – had the ever met.
This outcome could occur if Froch thinks too hard about a Ward rematch and forgets the task in front of him, for Groves is a special talent ready for the big time.
DeGale is also not giving up hope of a clash with Froch, for the 27-year-old is ready to make the step up and match his compatriot toe to toe. The problem Froch has is that neither opponent has much pulling power outside the UK, which is why a rematch with American Ward is so much more desirable.
Maybe Froch should concentrate on defending his national front before seeking fights elsewhere, for his career would be all but over should he lose to either young Brit.
