Unbeaten IBO/WBA middleweight champion and boxing’s best kept secret, Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) impressed in his American debut against the tough and durable Grzegorz Proksa (28-2, 21 KO’s) by stopping Proksa in the 5th round by TKO. The Athens silver medalist and middleweight title holder pitched a shutout, dropping Proksa in the first and fourth rounds with vicious left hooks to the body and a big left hand that has fueled the buzz about him from his sparring sessions against heavyweights along with his 21 knockouts thus far in his career. Golovkin will now undoubtedly wait for the outcome of the September 15th middleweight title fight between Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. and Sergio Martinez to put in his bid for a chance at a title unification bout that will also determine the supremacy of the middleweight division.
On the undercard of the middleweight title fight, undefeated junior middleweight prospect, Jonathan Gonzalez (16-0-1, 13 KO’s) took on former WBO junior middleweight champion Sergiy “Razor” Dzinziruk (37-1-1, 23 KOs). Gonzalez ended up coming in 9 pounds over the junior middleweight limit and by fight time was near the light heavyweight limit. Although being a smaller opponent against a young talent with heavy hands, Dzinsiruk ended up taking the fight to a draw. Official scorecards at the end of 12 rounds were 117-111 Gonzalez, 115-113 Dzinziruk and 114-114.
